The National Emergency Management Agency has issued a national tsunami advisory after the magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, at 11.25 this morning.
In Canterbury, we are expecting strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore starting from approximately 1am tomorrow morning, Thursday 31 July, and possibly continuing throughout Thursday.
People should stay out of the sea, estuaries, lagoons, off beaches and out of river mouth areas where the currents will be strongest (the red tsunami evacuation zones).

A state of local emergency has now also been declared for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. Mayor Phil Mauger made the declaration at 4pm due to the impact of the wet weather such as flooding, slips, landslide and falling trees, particularly on Banks Peninsula.
A state of local emergency has been lifted for Selwyn District at 3pm on Friday 2nd of May by Mayor Sam Broughton.
