Fires

About fires in Canterbury

While wildfires can happen at any time of year, Canterbury’s dry, hot and sometimes windy summer conditions are ideal for fires to start and spread. Most wildfires in New Zealand are started by people, either on purpose or by accident.

The 2017 Port Hills fire swept across 2000 hectares of the Port Hills, destroying 11 homes and resulting in the death of a helicopter pilot. There have also been recent fires in the Hurunui and Mackenzie Districts, and the ongoing rapid change to our climate will result in increased fire risk.

What you can do

BEFORE - Top 3 things you can do to prepare for a fire
  1. Know if it's safe to light a fire. Head to checkitsalright.nz.
  2. If you live in a rural or semi-rural area, go through the rural home fire safety checklist and consider rural fire insurance.
  3. Make sure your Rural Address Property Identification (RAPID) Number is clearly posted and that emergency vehicles can access the property and fire-fighting water supply easily.
DURING - What to do when a fire is burning
  • If you see smoke or a fire, call 111 immediately and ask for 'Fire'.
  • Listen to the radio or follow social media for instructions from Fire and Emergency NZ (Twitter @fireemergencynz and Facebook @fireandemergencynz) or Civil Defence.
  • Be ready to evacuate if you have to - get out and stay out until given the all-clear to return.
  • Take personal belongings, important documents and pets with you if there is time to collect these safely before you leave.
AFTER - What to do when the fire is out
  • If you were instructed to evacuate, do not return to your property until you have been given the all-clear by Fire and Emergency NZ or Civil Defence.
  • Be aware that if your garden or surrounding area has been burnt, the fire may have created new hazards such as hidden holes where tree roots have burnt underground.
  • Your home may need to be checked by your local Council building inspector before you can move back in.
