Storms

About storms in Canterbury

Canterbury lies on the lee side of a mountain range that reaches into the stormy ‘Roaring Forties’. This part of the world lies between 40 and 50 degrees latitude south where mild air from the north meets cooler air from the south. Compared to other countries, our weather is very changeable, and we can get storms from any direction, at any time of the year.

Canterbury can experience strong winds, particularly coming over the mountains from the northwest, snowstorms from the south, and sometimes ex-tropical cyclones from the north. We can experience thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes as well as coastal flooding associated with big swells and storm surges.

What you can do

BEFORE - Top 3 things you can do to prepare for a storm
  1. Keep up to date with the latest weather information online at Metservice, or on the radio or TV.
  2. Check your roof and guttering is secure.
  3. Make sure you have enough supplies to last a few days, including alternative ways to heat and light your home, and cook, if the power is cut. Head to our home ready page to find out how to make a plan before a storm hits.
DURING - What to do when a storm hits
  • If a storm is forecast, bring inside or tie down anything that can be broken or picked up by strong winds. Branches can become missiles in high winds. If you have a trampoline, turn it upside down or make sure it is properly secured. Bring pets indoors.
  • Stay informed - listen to the radio or monitor your local Civil Defence online channels.  You can find these by clicking your district on the homepage map.
  • Stay inside - don't walk around outside and avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
  • If it is windy, close exterior and interior doors and windows but open a window on the side of the building away from the wind – this will relieve pressure on the roof. Pull curtains and blinds over windows and stay away from them.
  • Watch out for lightning or power surges. Avoid bathtubs, taps and sinks because metal pipes and plumbing can conduct electricity if struck by lightning. Use your water from your emergency supplies.  Unplug small appliances that may be affected by electrical power surges. If power is lost, unplug major appliances to reduce the power surge and possible damage when power is restored.
AFTER - What to do when the storm clears
  • Check for injuries and get first aid if necessary.
  • Keep listening to the radio or follow your local Civil Defence online channels for information and instructions.
  • Check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.
  • Keep away from dangling and broken power lines. Treat them as live and notify your power supply company if you see lines damaged.
  • Contact your local Council if your house or building has been severely damaged. Ask your Council for advice on how to clean up debris safely. Take photos of any damage and contact your insurance company as soon as possible.
