Canterbury gives back – supporting the West Coast and Marlborough

During the Canterbury floods in late May/early June we truly welcomed the support from other Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups that sent their staff to help in our Emergency Coordination Centre to coordinate the mahi of local Emergency Operation Centers (EOC), emergency services and other agencies that work together to make sure our communities are looked after.

So we didn’t think twice when our neighbouring CDEM Groups on the West Coast and in Marlborough needed some support to maintain the hard mahi of their EOCs and wider communities to respond to the floods in July.

Volunteers are an integral part to an emergency response

The mahi of those who’ve spent their free time helping Civil Defence respond to emergencies is being recognised during National Volunteer Week.

From earthquakes to COVID-19 to the most recent event, the Canterbury floods, the past year has been a busy one for the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group and its teams of highly-skilled volunteers.
